Adding altogether means we will count all the objects in both the boxes
In the figure below first box has 3 rats and second box also has 3 rats and counting all the rats we have 6 rats in third box.
So we can say that
3 + 3 = 6
Similarly
3 + 1 = 4
In the figure below first box has 2 cats and second box has 3 cat and counting all cats we have 5 cats in third box.
